A short, wild cave inside McCormick's Creek State Park — Indiana's first state park — and one of the few caves in the DNR system you can explore on your own. The passage runs roughly 350 feet: you can walk much of it, with a low, muddy squeeze through the middle that's the highlight for first-timers. Reached on foot via Trail 5 (the Wolf Cave Nature Preserve loop). A great low-commitment introduction to wild caving — bring lights and expect mud.

Entrance

On the Wolf Cave Nature Preserve loop (Trail 5) in McCormick's Creek State Park; a marked park feature reached by a short walk from the trail.

Hazards

  • Low, muddy squeeze through the middle section
  • Standing water and slick mud
  • Total darkness — carry three independent light sources
  • Low ceilings — watch your head

Gear

Helmet and a reliable headlamp plus backup lights; clothes and shoes you don't mind getting muddy. No technical/vertical gear needed.

Geology

Mississippian limestone karst, carved by a small stream that still runs through parts of the passage.

Access

Inside McCormick's Creek State Park; standard park gate fee applies. The cave has been closed seasonally in the past to protect hibernating bats — check current Indiana DNR status before you go.

Conservation

Bats hibernate in caves throughout the region; Wolf Cave has been subject to seasonal closures tied to white-nose syndrome (WNS). Decontaminate gear between caves, never disturb bats, and obey all posted closures.

Caving responsibly

Most wild caves are reached through the local caving community, not by showing up — joining a grotto gets you training, gear advice, a conservation ethic, and, in time, cave locations.

A trail records the way through a cave — walk it once and anyone can follow it back in or out. Near the entrance with GPS it replays in AR; deep underground it's a compass guide (no signal needed).
